    Description

Hard Times Tokens were privately minted from 1832 to 1844. Many were critical of President Andrew Jackson and his economic and public land purchase policies.  This one was minted in 1837, the last partial year of Jackson's administration and the first year of Martin Van Buren's Presidency. Van Buren had famously vowed to "Follow in the footsteps of my illustrious leader."  That phrase is engraved on this token.  In a not so subtle image, the coin depicts a flight of steps with a donkey (ass) stepping over them.  This is a nice looking coin.  The date and all of the words and phrases are sharp and complete.  There is obvious wear only on the highest points of the turtle's shell and the donkey's side.  I don't know what the grading standards are for hard times tokens, but if I had to judge, I would rate this one as very fine.  The pictures are part of the description, so you be the judge.
