    Description

Tridymite is a very rare silicate mineral found in only a small number of iron meteorite.
Of the 1,350 classified iron meteorites (November 2022) there only around 8 that are known to contain tridymite (

Scientists are still unclear how silicate and metallic liquids of very different density could co-exist, since buoyancy effects should have caused the two to separate. Various explanations have been offered: (1) the injection of silicate liquid into a partially molten core; (2) collisional break-up and reassembly; (3) two impacts involving melting of metal and silicate in separate impact events.
Research that is more recent points to a disruptive major impact event of one parent body.
After that, during the recreation phase, the metal and silicate from the core-mantle boundary were mixed.
The yellow-white tabular inclusion (tridymite) on this Gibeon iron meteorite (IVA) is 10mm x 1.5mm on both sides.
The black chromite (?) grains, which crystalized from the same melt system surrounds the tridymite.
