Description
12.3g full slice of NWA 14451 Ureilite (augute bearing ) Meteorite..Last year I purchased an unclassified ureilite found near Tindouf, Algeria. It was officially classified and published to metbul earlier this year (Feb, 2022). The TKW of this find is 880g (in 5 pieces). NWA 14451 was classified by Tony Irving. According to Dr. Irving, NWA 14451 has a “Protogranular texture (mean grainsize ~1.5 mm). Composed predominantly of olivine (~70 vol.%) and pigeonite (~25 vol.%) with accessory subcalcic augite, graphite, kamacite, troilite (with variable Cr and Ni contents) and pentlandite. Both olivine and pigeonite have reduced, more magnesian rims associated with stained, fine grained Fe metal”.
It is important to note that of the 653 ureilites in metbul, only ~10% of them mention the presence of augite. According to my buddy, Michael Kelly, the majority of ureilites are Olivine-pigeonite compositions. The presence of augite is a potential indicator of ureilites formed from deeper within the ureilite parent body.
Having this material cut and polished is a pain. As such, I only had about a quarter of the TKW prepared. Get one, while supplies last! This 12.3g full slice has been beautifully polished on one side, left un-polished on the reverse. Pictures don’t do this material justice.
(Scale cube and display stand not included).
