The Namibian Nama people knew about this iron before English captain J. E. Alexander heard of iron masses and obtained samples that were sent to London and confirmed the rock to be a meteorite in 1838.
The fall of the Gibeon meteorite is estimated to have occurred in prehistoric times, no craters have been identified. The strewn field is very large and covers an area of about 100x300 km.
Octahedrite known for its beautiful Widmanstätten pattern.
